The Greatest Gatsby

2020 was quite the year. I started this blog in the same month that the accounting firm I worked for transitioned to a complete work-from-home arrangement. Blogging would have been a fantastic way to pass the time with businesses being closed, social gatherings banned, and a massive increase in time spent at home. As you might be able to see by the dates on my posts, I didn’t post anything after March. A large part of that is thanks to Gatsby.

What’s Gatsby? Who’s Gatsby? He is our (my wife and I) tiny but unruly Pomeranian puppy. He was born on Valentine’s Day 2020, and we got him in April. His coat is what’s called a “cream” color, and now that he is almost a year old he’s right around 5 pounds.

His first year has been full of trips to the vet. He’s been neutered, he’s had a few intestinal issues that required medication, he retained some of his puppy teeth that needed pulled, and he’s had to go to a few consultations for his hip. Turns out, he has the beginning stages of a serious hip issue, and needs a full hip replacement. Because he was so young when the symptoms began, we’ve had to monitor him and resort to pain management for the last few months while we wait for him to hit his first birthday. Apparently it is not advisable for dogs to undergo certain procedures before growth milestones.

So aside from any economic or social effects and impacts that I realized during 2020, a lot of my time or mental energy outside of work has been devoted to little Gatsby. He has a follow-up consultation scheduled for next month, since he will be a year old. I’m looking forward to getting him a new hip. He loves to run, and it’s heartbreaking to have to stop him from sprinting across the room to protect his tiny little bones.
